VISUAL RESEARCH

figure 1.1, source from: https://www.chinafetching.com/chang-e-hou-yi

My idea is about the Cultural Celebration of the 'Mooncake Festival, and when we talk about the mooncake festival the character is about the goddess which is Chang'e, the Chinese goddess of the Moon. The legendary story about her is that she was the subject of several legends in Chinese mythology, most of which incorporate several of the following elements: Houyi the archer, a benevolent or malevolent emperor, the elixir of life, and the Moon. She was married to Houyi.

During the Mid-Autumn Festival, when the full Moon appears on the night of the eighth lunar month, an open-air altar is set up facing the Moon for the worship of Chang'e. Her story is commonly used as a cautionary tale from older generations to warn young girls about the dangers of following selfish desires.

My inspiration is actually when I'm doing my research, most of the art showing Chang'E leaving earth and flying to the Moon, the very minimum design that is about the afterlife of Chang'E when she entered the zone on the Moon, hence I decided to create a design that is about 'What is Chang'E doing when she's on the Moon.'

DESIGN PROGRESS

figure 2,1, sketch #1

My first attempt was not perfect due to the Chang'E being too flat and the body of her is not well proportioned I would say it looks odd on it as at first my attempt for Chang'e body is casually drafty thus the body shape is in shape of a circle and it not a nice design, but it did remind me of a traditional Chinese dessert which is Tanghulu a dessert that combined sugar and any types of fruits. However, I do fancy the colour of the layout and the shape of the rabbits. Most of my work uses pen tools and ellipse tools.

figure 2.2, sketch #2

For my sketch #2 is like to present the house of Chang'E on the Moon, and the mountain-like shapes are like the wave of the sky. Most of my work uses pen tools and ellipse tools.

figure 2.3, sources: Anxiong Qiu, The New record of Heaven and Earth

A book recommended by my friend, in the book has numerous marvellous designs in it, and this image captures my eyes as it's amazing how the artist; Anxiong Qiu combined the past and present together in art.  If pays attention to the details of an important field of modern civilisation, from a deeply-entrenched perspective of traditional Chinese culture, but also a container and presenter of its results.

figure 2.4, sketch #3

My idea of sketch #3 is that Chang'E is very casually playing her instrument on the moon however to make it more interesting the moon it's shaped like a 'traditional Chinese tea cup', and the circle below is representing a 'cloud'. Moreover, based on figure 2.3, I liked the idea of combining the past and present elements together. Most of my work uses pen tools and ellipse tools.

Final Design
The idea of the Mooncake festival is from Chinese culture hence my design by adding more of the east elements in it and the colour as well.

FEEDBACK
On week 5 the week of presenting our final work to our lecturer Mr Hafiz before submitting it to the HONOR Talents Global Design Awards,

before adjustment

Before I have come to Final Work, Mr Hafiz suggested trying to make the flow more synchronised and more united together instead of each of itself. Moreover, the first part of the Moon can be in the middle so it won't block the logo of the HONOR, and the house can be moved down a bit hence the flow following to the next art will look much nicer. For the second and third art can add some elements like the circles from the third one so it will look more united together. The colour combination is nice, nevertheless, the flow of the art can be improvised.

This is the suggestion layout from Mr Hafiz

REFLECTION

When I first heard that we only had around 3 weeks to complete 3 designs in one, it is a huge challenge for me as I was not a very creative person or a person that can instantly think of an idea and draft it easily. I was nervous that I might not make it on time, moreover, the very first attempt of my idea was to present three different cultural celebrations in Malaysia which are Chinese New Year for the race of Chinese people celebrate their new year, Hari Raya for the race Malay people to celebrate for their new year, and Deepavali for the race of Indian's people to celebrate for their new year. As Malaysia is a country that is known as a multicultural, multi-religion and multilingual country. However, I believe my mind was empty for several days as I am out of ideas to draft it out.

However, when I was dozing off I noticed a package of my mooncakes and on top of it is a picture of a rabbit and a moon but without Chang'e I was wondering why there was not Chang'E in it, as the iconic character for the Mooncake festival. I believe that was the very first inspiration for creating the final art of Chang'e. Throughout the design progress I am so thrilled I make a wonderful decision that I changed the theme from the Diverse Cultural Celebration in Malaysia to the Mooncake festival.

The project is full of nervosity and excitement, although, in a particularly short frame of time, the project allows me to enhance my AI skills, creative thinking and decisions.
