INSTRUCTIONS
MODULE INFORMATION BOOKLET
Week 1
Lecture 1 _Culture, Design & Research
Lecturer by: Miss Anis
Task 1 _ Proposal
In week 1, we were assigned to have a group of 6 members and we also been
giving adequate time to get to know more about each other, after class we
had a small brainstorming to discuss our proposal.
General Theme is "Visualism - Visual Culture"
There are a few ideas that come across our mind, our thoughts were:
1) Baba Nyonya
2) MCD
3) Martial Art
4) Bian Nian
5) Geisha (compare differences between Japan and China)
6) Gaming Culture
All of us choose one of the questions to research and then select which
topic is more suitable for the project as we need to come out with 3 design
outputs and a rationale for each. After discussion, we all agreed on "Baba
Nyonya", however, we misread the Module Information Booklet and realised
that Baba Nyonya may not suit the theme. The keyword of the theme was
"Visualism - Visual Culture" where it also has to be ' a cultural phenomenon
' with an explanation from Janice we understand that 'cultural phenomenon
itself means an act which gains popularity when a certain number of people
behave in a certain way or adopt a certain lifestyle/ accessory because
others do.

1) BeReal
2) Y2K culture
3) Maximalist
4) "That Girl"
5) True Crime Anthology Series
Then we realised that, if we do all research for these topics it will take
some time, hence after voting we all agreed on changing our direction to our
second idea "Y2K culture"

We distributed our own parts and tasks to do:
Research (Before)
For my own part, I was in charge of the
Influences: Style, Fashion, Pop Culture
Return of Y2K & Opinions (Criticisms or Praise)
However, after receiving feedback from Mr Asrizal, we make some slight
changes, instead of Y2K culture we changed our research direction to the
Influences of the early 2000s on Material Culture.
Research (New)
For my own part, I was in charge of the
Influences: Style and Fashion
Return of the early 20s fashion (Y2K) _ (Criticisms or Praise)

Individual Ideation & Sketches (New)
1) Idea 1: 2000s - Inspired Looping Motion Graphics (by Janice)
We plan to add up the elements that. make up an artwork with a
2000s-inspired visual design and create movements for certain elements
with quick switch-ups in between to create a motion graphic. It would be
around the duration of 3 to 5 seconds before setting it to a lopping
video. The final output will be screened or projected on the surface of
the water, making use of the covering waves to create texture.
2) Idea 2: 2023 = 2000s Lookbook (Guide to 2000s Influence on Current
Material Cultures) (by Janice)
The content of the lookbook would be information and research we did to
showcase the influences on our material culture now from the early 2000s
fashion culture. The art style and the template would also be planned as
inspired by the early 2000s fashion culture that I very futurised,
graffiti, hip hop themed. And the artworks or visuals that will be
included in the lookbook will be a "doodle/hand drawn over photography"
kind of look.
3) Hidden Meaning Poster (by me 'Christine')
We plan to sketch a model wearing outfits that had Y2K styles/ elements
and we will use a bold typeface to surround the model, We will be using
two methods: one is hand-drawing the text and digital tools; Adobe
Illustrator to illustrate the model. We will also be adding some Y2K
aesthetic for the background.

After receiving feedback from our lecturer, we either select ideas 1 or 2, thus with voting amongst the group members, we decided to go with Idea 2: 2023 = 2000s Lookbook _ Guide to 2000s Influence on Current Material Cultures.

opinions on the early 2000s influence on Malaysia's material culture and
how much they understand the early 2000s fashion culture. The survey
form was prepared by our group members: Chye Wei (Sherlyn), Joyee and
Xinyee.
Below is the list of questions that we conducted in the
form:

After our presentation, the lecturer asked us to print out our artwork
in poster size and give it to them, although we asked for a reason
however it still remains a secret.
FEEDBACK
Week 2 & 3, 24th January 2023 - 31st January 2023
General Feedback:
Mr Asrizal thinks the topic of Y2K culture may not be suitable for the
theme, hence his suggestions were 90/2000s fashion influenced a certain
'fashion' culture.

Specific Feedback: The dressing from the ancient Greek sculptures in the Y2K idea, it's
inappropriate.
Week 4, 7th February 2023
General Feedback: The research was well-prepared, with great
presentation, well-orientated, had clear direction and was able to see the
passion and great understanding. The topic is refreshing.
Specific Feedback: You can select either Ideas 1 & 2 and may proceed however for Idea 3,
the lecturer thinks that it may not be suitable to use a model to present
the hidden meaning poster moreover the poster should be more
defined.
Week 5, 14th February 2023
No feedback as this week is about Data Collections
Week 6, 21th Febraury 2023
General feedback: The slides for
Data Collection it is clear and well-understood.
No specific feedback.
Week 7, 28th Febraury 2023
General & specific feedback: It was a good presentation, the art was
refreshing and interesting.
REFLECTION
Experience
Throughout my whole experience with this module Intercultural
Information, it was different than other modules as we are not just
completing the assignment, we were being exposed to a culture that I was
not fully well aware of its history. It was interesting to know a fun fact
about other cultures, moreover, there is some up and down moments, one of
the most confusing parts where after we have decided on the topic "Boba
Nyonnya" our first choice and we realised that we might be on a wrong
track, (after the feedback from the lecturer) we need to come out with
other ideas that are fit the theme. Nevertheless, it was also a part of
the journey and I am glad that our final decision is the "Influences of
the early 2000s on material culture". Besides that, there's also some challenging part and I believe it would be the part
where we need to come out with either 3 topics with one sketch for each or
1 topic but with 3 different ideas. But luckily, our group is very
positive and supportive, and we are all brainstorming what we want to show
to our audience and what is our direction, throughout the research, it was
interesting as well, as it is about the influences from the 2000s which is
my cup of tea.
Overall, it was really fun to work with my teammates, everyone sticks to
their tasks and completed them wonderfully, we have the best team spirit
and we all well blended with each other, we listened and pay attention to
each member's opinions and together find better solutions that everyone is
satisfied. The final outcome was amazing and it is striking to our sense
of eye. The modules, although, were a short journey and I am grateful that
I have such amazing groupmates side by side with me.
