PROJECT 1 _ AUDIO EDITING EXERCISES

Exercise 1_ Audio Dubbing

Instructions:
  • Insert all of the background sound/ambient noises
  • Along with our own altered sounds for each cast by reading the captions displayed.

Progress
To begin, I started by viewing the original clip within the Premiere Pro timeline. Then, I proceeded to create a detailed spreadsheet listing each scene and the corresponding sound effects required.

During the process, I explored various background sounds and relevant ambient noises to identify the most suitable options for the clip. It was particularly challenging to find appropriate ambiences that could effectively foreshadow the action setting. However, by considering the indoor and outdoor settings associated with different ambiences, I eventually managed to identify and select the most suitable ambient noises.

When it came to recording my own voice, it was relatively easy to exclude distracting background noises. This was because I recorded my voice in a quiet room where silence prevailed.

Exercise 2_Sound Shaping

Instructions:

1. Apply the specified effects to the following audio elements:
   - Voice of phone call
   - Voice coming from inside the closet
   - Voice of toilet/bathroom
   - Understanding cave
   - Use Audio 2_40

2. Once the effects have been applied, export the audio file to the mp3 format.

3. Upload the exported mp3 file to both Google Drive and our blog, specifically under Project 1

Progression:
The ultimate audio manipulation assignment entails manipulating the audio to simulate being in a cave. To do this, I will use two well-known effects: the Parametric Equaliser and Reverb.I hope to recreate the unique acoustic characteristics of a cave-like setting by integrating reverberations and changing ambient noise levels in the core audio signal.

For this exercise, I followed Mr. Martins' instructions as outlined in his slides, except for one minor change. I used the Reverb Effect instead of the Parametric Equaliser. This change was made because the Reverb Effect produces a white noise echo to the original audio, which is great for replicating toilet/bathroom acoustics.

The initial assignment focused on the phone call portion for audio shaping. During his presentation, Mr Martins provided a succinct illustration of the best technique for doing this operation with Adobe Audition. This software offered me all of the essential tools and effects, all of which were easily accessible through its user-friendly interface. I obtained a thorough understanding of how to explore and use the features of Adobe Audition for audio shaping thanks to his teaching.

The new method was carried out in the same manner as the previous one, strictly sticking to the instructions outlined by Mr Martins during his presentation. Despite this, considerable differences have been detected in the present iteration. The sound wavelengths were noticeably different, giving in a muffled or muted impression to imitate being in an enclosed area. The auditory output aligned with the initial expectations after applying the effect, resulting in the desired impact.

REFLECTION

Experience
Working on this audio editing job with Premiere Pro has been an eye-opening and rewarding experience. To begin, I carefully examined the original clip within the timeline and meticulously catalogued each scene and its associated sound effects on a spreadsheet. Following the directions, I concentrated on including background sounds and ambient noises to improve the audio of the clip. Throughout the process, I came across some surprising ideas. Finding appropriate ambient noises for a foreshadowing action environment proved to be a considerable difficulty at first. However, I quickly realised that carefully examining the indoor and outdoor locations represented in the video allowed me to pinpoint and select the most appropriate ambient noises. It became clear that investigating various background sounds and appropriate ambient noises was critical to getting the desired results.

Observations
I made some amazing insights when processing the audio. When looking for acceptable ambient noises to create a foreboding atmosphere for an action situation, I encountered difficulties. I soon realised, however, that by carefully analysing the indoor and outdoor locations represented in the tape, I could find and select the most appropriate ambient noises. This experience demonstrated the importance of investigating diverse background sounds and relevant ambient noises since they were crucial in reaching the ideal audio quality.

Findings
Participating in this project proved to be highly beneficial, offering me valuable insights and advantages. I discovered that eliminating distracting background noises from my own voice recordings was a relatively straightforward task, thanks to the tranquil environment of my personal closet. This allowed me to focus on recording my voice and adjusting each clip to match the voices and pitch of the characters accurately. Placing the audio files on the timeline and synchronizing them with the video was a crucial step in the editing process, ensuring seamless integration between audio and visuals.

The organizational aspect of the project involved effectively utilizing audio tracks. I allocated four tracks for dialogue, assigning one track to each character. This approach facilitated a well-structured and organized editing workflow. Throughout this journey, I gained invaluable hands-on experience in various audio editing techniques. Additionally, I realized the importance of meticulous scene analysis to determine the most suitable audio enhancements. Selecting appropriate ambient noises played a significant role in enhancing the overall audio experience.

Overall, this project enriched my understanding of audio editing, sharpened my technical skills, and deepened my appreciation for the meticulous attention to detail required in audio post-production.
