Mind Map
Who am I? (week 5, 27/9/2022)

Before I begin to sketch out my self-portrait, we were assigned to create a mind map to have a clearer picture of ourselves, we can choose to close ourselves, so I decided to present my weakness, strength, characteristics, and things I will do (meditation), Essential and Brain, as the theory of the left, are tend to be more logistics, good at math however I am not that good at math so I highlighted on it, I would say I'm more on the right brain person. I am a more emotional person.

I choose to present 'Horror' in 'Weakness' for my theme of self-portrait.

VISUAL RESEARCH

figure 1.1 sources Pinterest: https://pin.it/4xOHjws. (Week 5 29.9.2022)

The art is using the technique of digital collage, the author uses his portrait and put the items he likes such as flowers and art drawings that he likes all combined together, I find it interesting to use digital collages as a way to express themselves.

When I saw the art, my idea was to create art that presented me and my brain cut into half and the inside filled with things I like and dislike or fear.

John Battalgazi likes to used shapes to create his own style of art.

Personally, I like the art from the designer John Battalgazi, as it is remarkable how he used a very seems a simple way of designing art but yet when combined all together it becomes a very unique piece of art. The art has the principles of gestalt theory and a slight repetition of the circle shapes.

figure 1.5, sources from https://fineartamerica.com/featured/fear-april-reilly.html, (Week 6 9.10.2022)

In the artwork by April, The Art Weasel, the description of the art is "Too scared to go through the door". While I was searching some research for my art as I was trying to have more scary images, and this art captured my eyes although the description is too scary I was thinking the shadow can be the girl herself as if she is the 'devil' but she did not realise it. Thus when I thought I felt like is possible to create art that make people wonder the question 'is evil around us or are we the evil ones?'

PROGRESS AND IDEA EXPLORATION

fig, 2.1, sketch #1 (Week 5 29.9.2022)
In Sketch #1, I was trying to present the two different of 'me' however both are experiencing different life, the idea is presenting the one upside down as haunted by a spirit and the other side as having a normal life.

fig, 2.2, sketch #2 (Week 5 29.9.2022)
For sketch #2, I try to change the position to see will it be better this way.

fig, 2.3, sketch #3 (Week 5 29.9.2022)
I have an idea of like presenting a scenario of 'me' walking as usual and behind 'me' being haunted by the spirit. However, I feel that is not scary enough.

The first attempt was to focus on the 'horror' so the concept is to present art that shows the two characters which are 'me' experiencing a different life. However, throughout numerous attempts, I feel like this is not the way that I want to portray myself. Thus, I give a second thought and rearrange my ideas and designs, thus I did some research so my focus will still focus on 'Horror'.

fig, 2.4, the sketch of the demon. (Week 6 9.10.2022)

I created the 'demon' by using a pen tool from AI.

fig, 2.5 the outline of 'demon' (Week 6 9.10.2022)

I used the Mesh tool from AI to create the effect for the body, the concept is similar from the movie 'Venom' that stick on their host.

fig, 2.6, sketch #4. (Week 6 9.10.2022)

The thought of 'bad; 'or evil' is unquestionably has been encountered by everyone, a question that has been debated by philosophers for centuries  'were we born good or evil?'

Well, in my opinion, I believe no one is either one instead we are both of it, 'evil' is very good at hiding, however, it will appear to you immediately once you need them. My art is to present that everyone has their own evil part including me, hence once we have bad thoughts, they will rot our mind without us realising. We look normal but we know that we are not once we face our own shadow. The devil is there to enlarge our inner evil part.

The art is all created by using a pen tool, eclipse tool, mash tool and gradient effect. I added the shadow in an evil form to show that I am slowly becoming one of 'them'. And when I saw my shadow I am frightened.

fig, 2.7, sketch #5. (Week 6, 11.10.2022)

I tried to change the shadow into a darker colour and bought attention to the 'devil' by changing the colour brighter.

FINAL DESIGN & Rationale
the final design for the self-portrait (Week 6, 11.10.2022)

Personally, I find it difficult to reveal parts or entirely of myself to anyone, regards emotions or my real personality however the aim of this exercise is wanted us to get to know more about ourselves, but that is also difficult to do because it is uncomfortable to face your own weakness, and deep down I do know what kind of person I am but I choose to not reveal that side of myself to anyone. I do have some 'bad' thoughts occasionally which brings me a shock that I have that kind of thoughts, hence the art I'm trying to present is I do have evil thoughts sometimes, I am even shocked that I have that mindset hence am I evil?

I believe no one is born good or evil when we had 'bad' thoughts it is okay as long we don't actually practice them and hurt people.

FEEDBACK

Week 6 - 4/10/2022
The combinations of colour are interesting, however, Sketch #2 can try many ways to improvise it such as instead of the skull on top of the head, can try to open the head of 'me' and the skull is on top of it.

Sketch #3, if trying to show the two different dimensions of 'me' the alignments will seem not suitable, as the image of myself all uses circles so is the art presents too different like square and circle it will seem quite odd because two of it is a very different shape.

General feedback, even the idea and sketch is interesting however, Dr Yip encourages us to try various ways to portray ourselves instead of having just one idea.

Week 7 - 11/10/2022
The idea is interesting, however, can try to change the devil's colour brighter to have contrast, and the shadow can change the colour darker. The general idea brings out a deep meaning for the audience to receive the message, as the self-portrait majority will think of drawing of themselves however an idea like self-portray by also bringing a message is quite interesting.

REFLECTION

Self-portrait definitely is a new area for me, is my first time exploring this area as the whole concept of portraying myself has never approached me, hence the beginning was tough for me as I was struggling what is the best way to portray myself. The first attempt at my idea failed, I find it quite a cliche that my first draft is always not the kind of art that I wanted to present, but I do enjoy seeing the differences between my first draft and final work. Also, I like how this exercise gives us the freedom to use any materials and allows us to learn more about ourselves and find ways to express ourselves.
