INSTRUCTIONS

PROCESS FOR SELF TITLED
Our final project is called Self - Titled, we are assigned to create our own self-portrait by using various Photoshop techniques. Finally, we are to implement the After Effect to create an animated of our own self-portrait.

Fig 1.2, The inspiration that I used for my research, source from Pinterest

All the research inspired me to have at least insert a few elements in my project, such as the wings in figure 1, and the background from figure 1.1, and I like flowers hence adding the elements of flowers.
Fig 2, Roughly Sketch

Roughly sketch of my work, at first I was trying to create a visual effect of a girl losing her wings, however, after receiving feedback from Mr Martin, the idea does not fit well with my theme. So I decided to change to another design.

The process of creating my work on Adobe Photoshop:

Fig 2.1, Gradient map

I used a gradient to create the background colour which I think is match the entire tone.

Fig 2.2 Solid colour picture

The background pic is referring to Fig 1.1, I cropped part of it out and masked it, and rotate the picture onto the right side.

Fig 2.3, shadow picture

Fig 2.4, revert to 'Exclusion'

Moving on, I added the background photo referring to Fig 1.1, however, I revert the colours into exclusion which I think matches the background due to reverting the colours becoming a more blueish shadow.

Fig 2.5, final outcome of the background

This is how the final outcome of my background. I ensure that every side of the solid picture has its own shadow.

Fig 2.6, insert the wings

I added different colours of the wings, 'black and white, and I used the pen tools to select my image.

Fig 2.7, insert the sunflowers

Furthermore, I like flowers and my favourite one is the sunflower, so I decided to add some sunflower to it. The reason behind, why I insert the flower is because I want to have something that represents my characteristics I feel sunflower is a type of flower that fits my personality, it represents that I am bright and positive.

Fig 2.8, original picture

I took pictures for my Final Project, and I did not have any big expressions I feel that sitting down and looking in the left direction kinda brings out the feeling of 'I am wondering or exploring' plus the colour of my outfit matches the entire tone including the pants and shoes.

Fig 2.9, cropped out by using the pen tool

I cropped it out by using the pen tool.

Fig 2.10, insert shadow

I added a shadow under the shoe. Finally, combining all together and here is the final look.

Fig 2.11, Final outcome picture

Since our final outcome is to be animated hence, I made sure to separate the layers and ensure it is neatly organized. Here are the layers that I have used.

Fig 2.12, The layers used so far.

Once, the final outcome is done, I imported my file into Adobe After Effects. First I begin with the background rotation, I rearrange the position and create the z rotation hence it will bring out the effect of moving from up towards down. My idea is to put all the solid colour pictures rotating in a clockwise direction, however, the shadow will be all anti-clockwise, and I think the visual effect will be more impactful. I have around 6 layers to rotate, hence I'm only going to show four of the layers.

Fig 3, The orientation of the background picture includes the shadow as well (Left)

Fig 3.1, The orientation of the background picture includes the shadow as well (Right)

Moving on to the wings, my idea was to use the 'scale' to make them smaller, unnoticeably at first, thus slowly enlarging them along with my body picture so as to have the effect of 'my wings are on my back. In order to do so, I need to match their timeline so it will look more smoother.

Fig 3.2, The 'scale' adjustment for my 'body' picture.

I decided to use some simple effects on the wings to show that they are moving, to make it more natural.

Fig 3.3, The orientation and scale for the black and white wings

Moving on to the 'sunflower' I plan to rotate the 3 sunflowers, I feel that having sunflowers that really brighten up the atmosphere as sunflower is known as positive and bright.

THE FINAL OUTCOME ANIMATED SELF_ TITLED
Completed animation of my final project

I decided to name my work 'There's no truly good or bad." I often wonder the question 'Does humans born to be good or to be evil?' I think that people are complicated. The black colour wing is to represent that I do too have some part of me that isn't 100% good and the white colour wing represents that I do have a good part of me. The message is to tell people that we don't need to be perfectly good, we are just human beings hence a little bad thought is fine, it does not categorize us as bad people but just bear in mind not to practice them. I decided not to add any sound effects, I feel that whenever we are in our own personal space, we tend to be more focused in a quiet place, plus I feel that a topic that is personal does not need any sound effects.

FEEDBACKS
Week 10: The idea is fresh, it will be interesting to create a work about it. It will be better if the sketch is clearer as now fig 2 the visual does not match the theme of the work.

Week 11: Fig 2.11 is good enough for the final composition.

Week 12: The composition looks like a collage which is fine, there is no problem with it, however maybe can try to insert some shadow or darken a bit of the colour hence it won't look too bright or too much.

Week 13: There is no feedback.

Week 14: Mask the background as the squarish of the side is kind of distracting thus try to mask it properly, otherwise can submit it for the final project.

REFLECTIONS
It was an interesting journey and an engaging experience for me, One of my favourite tasks is to mask out the part that I want and composite it in Photoshop. This module allows me to learn and understand the workflow between two different applications, beginning with the composition through Photoshop and continuing animate in After Effects. One thing I like about After Effects is I can design my work in which direction I want and how I want to be present. Probably the most challenging part for me is at the beginning I was not too familiar with After Effect hence I did a lot of mistakes however with the help from Mr Martin, I slowly caught up and now I kinda like After Effect.
