LECTURES
Week 8 Thursday 20/10/22
Introduction to Project 2_Sense of Place by Dr Yip. Observing nature helps
us to produce solutions to our needs. The design comes from Observing. The
things observed are translated into works of design.
The Importance of Observation, we need to be attentive to our
surroundings, pay attention to the details and be analytical about it.
Sources of observation can stem from artefacts, daily happenings, physical
surroundings and etc.

INSPIRATIONS
Fig 1, Image taken in Sydney around mid-November.
A picture I took when I visited Australia, Sydney, is called Jacaranda
trees. The blooming time of Jacaranda from mid-October through November,
they had a concise period of time. And I like the colour of the Jacaranda
trees, as the purple colour resembles 'soothing', 'calming'.
Fig 1.1, an Image of me and my sister was taken in Sydney around
mid-November.
We had a family trip around mid-November although it is not my first
time having a trip to Australia, however, this time the trip is the entire
family went to Australia, Sydney to visit my sister who is staying there currently. And we took a picture in the street as the Jacaranda
tree is a popular tree in Australia.
VISUAL RESEARCH
Fig 2, Sources Pinterest: https://pin.it/5uvK86l
An image I found on Pinterest, the inspiration I observed from this art is
the artist uses acrylic paint and draws the jacaranda trees and the
details of the stems it looked rather realistic and yet artistic at the
same time.

Another type of drawing style that I want to explore is by using a
highlighter pen to design my work. Hence, I searched for some relevant
work that is done with my highlighter pen.
PROGRESS & IDEA EXPLORATION
Attempt Sketch #1 Week 9, (18/10/22)
I used the highlighter pen to sketch my drawing. I'm not satisfied
with the position and the colour combination and the layout, it looks
very messy and is not appealing to the eye.
Attempt Sketch #2, highlighter pen. Week 10, (25/10/22)
I used a highlighter brush to draw the stems and use a green
highlighter brush to have a 'leaves' effect and use light and
dark purple as highlights for the flower as the pedal of
Jacaranda has the colour of light blueish, light purple and dark
purple. Personally, I like this attempt the most cuz it is
clean and the combination of the colour is attractive.
Attempt Sketch #3, highlighter pen. Week 10, (25/10/22)
I try to attempt different sides of view, for this sketch is a view of
'me looking up to the sky and the trees are displayed on the sides. The tools I
used are the same as sketch #2.
Continuing Attempt Sketch #4, highlighter pen. Week 10 (1/11/22)
I took the advice that is given on Week 10, to draw two sides of the trees by using a highlighter pen
Attempt Sketch #1, acrylic painting. Week 10,
(25/10/22)
In the first attempt at using acrylic paint for my work, the inspiration is referring to visual research #1. The view is from looking up to the sky thus it explained why the trees are painted at these sides.
Attempt Sketch #2, acrylic painting. Week 10 (25/10/22)
Attempt #2 is the view of looking at it in front, an eye-level view.
Continuing Attempt Sketch #3, acrylic painting. Week 10
(1/11/22)
This is an art that I painted while I was kinda frustrated as the number of attempts at creating the art Sense of Place kept increasing. Personally, I do not like this attempt, but I wanted to show that only when we have a peaceful mind then we can only think clearly and have a clearer mindset to create our art piece.
Continuing Attempt Sketch #4, acrylic painting. Week 10
(1/11/22)
I try to use a more lighter colour as a highlight of the tree, but I don't like the positioning of the petals because it looked weird.
Continuing Attempt Sketch #5, acrylic painting. Week 10 (1/11/22)
This attempt is to try on adding some green effect to have a bit of contrast to make it more lively. This time I improved the positioning of the flower petal as the direction is more natural.
FINAL "SENSE OF PLACE"
Final "Sense of Place" in jpeg. Week 10 (4/10/22)
Final "Sense of Place" in pdf. Week 10 (4/10/22)
The details of the art were there's purple and green leave falling down on the floor, and the two lines were actually to indicate that is the road, but the leaves were all covered up.
The art not only represents comfort moreover it also represents another meaning to me, as I remember vividly, the first day of our trip, the jacaranda tree is just right in front of our accommodation and in my sister's words sometimes it is hard to see a very well bloom Jacaranda trees and lots of people would travel to Australia just to see Jacaranda tree, thus that time my thought was, our trip is also gonna be wonderful, as first we are lucky to saw the trees for our first-day trip and our family are together to see such an amazing view.
FEEDBACK
On Week 9, Dr Yip commented on my work for 'Attempt Sketch #1',
the feedback was maybe I should try to work on a different angle, as
the work presented like 'I'm looking at the view from the window'
which means that the view is from up to down, and sense of place it
should be an art that you are in it or you are looking the view hence
the art should be drawn from our own eye level.
On week 10, I have more sketches to present, Dr Yip gave feedback on
'Attempt Sketch #2, highlighter pen' 'Attempt Sketch #3, highlighter pen', 'Attempt Sketch #1, acrylic painting' and 'Attempt Sketch #2, acrylic painting'. It is nice to have a
different attempt at different drawing styles, the advice given by
Dr Yip was 'Attempt Sketch #2, highlighter pen' is good, maybe can work
on it, but can add some sky colours and maybe can draw another tree
on the other sides and illustrate me on the middle maybe looking up
on the tree.
On Week 10, I asked Dr Yip for feedback on Teams for my 'Continuing Attempt Sketch #4', 'Continuing Attempt Sketch #3, acrylic painting' and
'Continuing Attempt Sketch #4, acrylic painting'. I asked Dr
Yip's opinion of 'can I don't insert the background colour as I feel
it does not fit the vibe. And the feedback was given as if I can express the sense of the place without a background colour
as, without it, it is bare. Even a hint of the sky would indicate
fresh air, calmness, etc. Really, it depends on the sense you intend
to portray.
REFLECTION
With this project, I've discovered the differences in cropping, angles
and elements that can affect the narrative of the sense of place. I
also do learn to observe even a slight change would make the entire
atmosphere change, for example, the weather, if I draw the weather as
'sunny' the entire vibe of the place would be light and relaxed,
however, if I draw the weather as 'gloomy' the entire vibe of the
place would be dark and heavy. Furthermore, throughout the process, I find that is
challenging by using the manual way, personally, I like the 'Attempt Sketch #2, highlighter pen' however I can't draw back the exact same way as it was. It's kinda
frustrating. Especially, when the deadline is coming closer and closer, it's increasing my frustration and anxiety hence sometimes I can't draw it properly as I want it to be quick, thus some of my attempts are noticeably getting worse.
I like my final work of Sense of Place, as I feel the combination of
colours is well more balanced and it does give a vibe of
relaxation. I think the project allows me to understand more about creating an art of a place is not just drawing based on our own memory it requires lots of observations and attention to detail.
